Allegations Against Michael Tait: A Deep Dive
A recent survey revealed serious accusations against Michael Tait, a former singer with Newsboys and co-founder of DC Talk. At least three men have come forward, claiming that Tait assaulted them in the early 2000s. Additionally, four other individuals reported experiencing inappropriate emotional behavior from him. The findings were based on months of research and interviews with 25 people connected to contemporary Christian music, some of whom described Tait’s alleged actions as “the greatest secret of Christian music.”
One of the men, Sean Davis, recounted his experience meeting Tait when he was just 16. He described how Tait was seen as a hero during that time. They would hang out at bars and parties, where Tait supposedly encouraged questionable behavior. According to Davis, Tait introduced him to cocaine in his home, leading to a particularly troubling incident where Tait allegedly gave him a drink that caused him to lose consciousness. Upon regaining awareness, Davis claimed he found himself in a compromising situation with Tait.
“This guy has destroyed my life,” Davis expressed, conveying the depth of his trauma.
Another man, identified only as “Gabriel,” shared that he met Tait at 19 and was drugged before being sexually assaulted. The impact of these events led Davis to question his faith, expressing frustration about Tait’s public image as a pious figure. He said, “It’s disheartening to see someone use their façade of righteousness to commit sins I’d never have imagined.” He eventually worked to reconnect with his faith, but acknowledged that some parts of his life would never be the same.
Meanwhile, a videographer from Nashville, Israel Anthem, recalled encountering Tait at the young age of 13, alleging inappropriate behavior. Anthem remarked on how Tait’s manipulative actions could undermine the integrity of the entire Christian music industry.
“In Nashville, you have three types of people,” Anthem noted. “Those who know about Tait and are survivors, those who believe the stories and await justice, and those who continue to profit from their association with him despite knowing the truth.”
Earlier this month, a report emerged detailing Tait’s long-standing issues with substance abuse and allegations of sexual misconduct towards young men. In light of these revelations, Tait admitted that many of the accusations were “largely true” and expressed regret over his actions. He stated that he had been living a lie, misrepresenting himself to friends, family, and fans. He described his newfound journey of recovery after completing a rehabilitation program in Utah, declaring himself six months sober.
“I’ve hurt so many people, and that is a reality I must live with,” Tait stated, apologizing sincerely to those he affected. “I’m genuinely sorry.”
