Michelle Obama believes Americans are ‘not ready’ for a female president: ‘We still have much to mature’

Michelle Obama Reflects on Female Leadership and Societal Readiness

Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently expressed her belief that the United States may not be fully prepared for a female president, emphasizing that “we have a lot of growing up to do.” She shared these thoughts while discussing Kamala Harris’ unsuccessful presidential run, indicating that gender played a more significant role in the loss than specific policies.

During a conversation with actress Tracee Ellis Ross at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Obama remarked, “As we’ve seen in past elections, unfortunately, we’re not ready.” She underscored that there’s still a prevailing sentiment among some men against leadership by women. “So don’t look at me about me running,” she clarified, suggesting that society has not yet embraced female leadership.

Obama also touched upon various cultural challenges faced by Black Americans, particularly relating to beauty standards. She questioned why society would legislate norms that require conforming to Eurocentric ideals, such as hair straightening. “Our hair naturally comes out of our heads in a curly pattern,” she explained, reflecting on how this affects physical activity and health.

These remarks led to a mixed reaction on social media, with some individuals, including conservative commentator Matt Walsh, criticizing her statements. He remarked on the irony of her position after having been elected for two terms, suggesting a deeper frustration over her comments toward white Americans.

Obama’s comments emerged while she promoted her new book, which explores her approach to fashion during her time as First Lady. The conversation highlighted not only her views on gender and race but also broader implications for societal change and acceptance.
