Michelle Obama Discusses Media Focus on Fashion Choices

Former first lady Michelle Obama expressed her frustration regarding how the media often emphasizes her fashion choices, even while promoting her new book. This occurred during her appearance on the podcast “Call Her Daddy” on Wednesday, where President Barack Obama was also discussing his autobiographical work, “The Look.” The book centers around the significance of fashion and beauty, exploring how they can reflect and support one’s values.

Reflecting on her early days in the public eye, Michelle mentioned that as her visibility increased, so did media scrutiny. “As my popularity grew, I started getting more coverage, right? So the press came into the scene, and now there’s coverage,” she noted. She pointed out that, instead of discussing her professional achievements, the headlines often focused on what she was wearing. It increasingly became an obsession, she remarked.

Michelle claimed that this preoccupation with her appearance served as a political tactic aimed at undermining her husband’s progress in politics. She voiced her concern about how women are often treated differently in the public realm, contrasting this with the lack of similar scrutiny faced by male politicians. “It was like, ‘Why did she wear this?’ and ‘Was that appropriate?’” she stated, adding that such questions distracted from the substantive content of her words.

Interestingly, some social media users noted the irony when podcast host Alex Cooper asked guests about their outfits just moments into their conversation. “Tell me about your outfit, how did you choose it?” he inquired less than a minute into the interview.

In discussing her clothing, Michelle shared a story about an outfit designed by Meredith Koop to reflect updates to her older looks from her time at Princeton. “This is the updated version,” she explained, showcasing how she’s adjusting her style over time.

Overall, while she accepted the discussion around fashion as part of her public persona, it also highlighted a broader issue regarding how society perceives and weighs women’s contributions based on their appearances, rather than their words or actions.
