Boston Mayor’s Stance on Immigration Enforcement
On Tuesday, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu publicly committed to defying the Department of Justice (DOJ) in her efforts to protect undocumented immigrants in the city.
The DOJ had previously issued a letter to Wu and other Democratic mayors and governors across the nation, demanding that they present plans to comply with federal immigration laws by a specified deadline. In a press conference, Wu emphasized her refusal to heed Attorney General Pam Bondi’s directive, criticizing the administration for its stance against cities that embrace immigrant protection.
“We’re back here again, as Boston received a letter from the U.S. Attorney General last week. [Pam Bondi] received boos from the audience due to the threats made to city officials about withholding federal funding unless they assist with large-scale deportations. But our community has made it clear: we cannot remain silent against oppression,” Wu articulated.
“The U.S. Attorney General has requested a response, so let me say this: Stop attacking our cities and stop concealing your administration’s failures. Unlike what was seen under the Trump administration, Boston adheres to the law.”
In this letter, the DOJ warned of potential funding cuts and civil lawsuits if Boston does not comply with their demands.
“By Tuesday, August 19, 2025, please submit a response confirming your commitment to federal compliance and outlining your immediate initiatives to amend laws that obstruct federal immigration enforcement,” Bondi stated. “This letter does not equate to any final agency lawsuit and doesn’t establish enforceable rights or benefits for the U.S.”
Wu hinted at her non-compliance on Monday, stating that “Boston is home for everyone,” as reported by local news sources.
During her 2021 mayoral campaign, Wu received over $300,000 from Gary Yu, the founder of the Chinese Civic Association, backed by Boston International Media Consulting. Reports indicate that Yu has ties to the Chinese Communist Party and has played a significant role in rallying Chinese-Americans in Massachusetts for political donations.
Since 2018, Yu has contributed approximately $45,515 to various Democratic politicians in Massachusetts, including Wu. Moreover, Wu has established connections with the Boston Urban Forum, a nonprofit founded by Yu, which reportedly featured CCP members in moderator and speaker roles at several events.
