Amir Hassan Proposes Tax Cuts for First Responders in Michigan
Amir Hassan, the Republican candidate for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, is putting forward a significant tax cut plan aimed at eliminating income taxes for first responders, such as police officers, nurses, teachers, and firefighters, who earn under $100,000 a year.
In an exclusive interview, Hassan expressed that his proposal is about “rewarding the power of the work that protects us.” He added, “I’ll be proposing laws that build on what President Trump has done. There’s no tax on tips, and now there shouldn’t be a tax for nurses, teachers, firefighters, and first responders below that income threshold. It’s essentially rewarding Americans for their contributions.”
Hassan, who has a background in federal law enforcement and is a U.S. Navy veteran, believes this initiative will motivate people to join essential services. “These jobs are foundational for successful communities,” he noted, indicating that there’s a need to attract more individuals into these roles.
He is challenging incumbent Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet for the seat. Rivet won her position in 2024, and the district has traditionally leaned Democratic for decades. However, during the last presidential election, Trump flipped the district in favor of Republicans.
Describing McDonald Rivet as “nothing new,” Hassan criticized her for sticking to party lines, arguing that this leads to detrimental outcomes. He emphasized his local roots, mentioning that his family has worked in places like General Motors, yet claimed that the district has suffered under Democratic leadership, especially with job losses to overseas markets.
In parallel to his tax proposals, Hassan remarked that he plans to promote job growth, particularly in the automotive sector, which he identifies as a core element of Michigan’s identity. He pointed out, “The automotive industry is essential for this district, but we also need to encourage other industries to establish here. There’s too much upheaval; we need more robust construction.”
In response to Hassan’s criticisms, McDonald Rivet’s campaign highlighted her recent accomplishments in providing substantial tax relief for working families, stating that she has a track record of bipartisan efforts aimed at improving constituents’ lives.
