Whitmer on Female Leadership in U.S. Politics

Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan’s Democratic governor, expressed her belief that America is now prepared for a female president. This statement comes as a response to former First Lady Michelle Obama’s earlier remarks suggesting that voters might not be ready to elect a woman to the highest office.

In a recent NPR interview, Whitmer shared her admiration for Michelle Obama, stating that the last thing she wants is to disagree with her. Nonetheless, she holds a contrasting view. “I really think America is ready for a female president,” she remarked.

Whitmer noted that in the most recent election, although Kamala Harris didn’t win against President Trump, many women achieved significant victories across the country. “There’s definitely a movement, especially with women gaining traction in crucial and difficult-to-win states,” she observed.

She acknowledged the election of Democratic women such as Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey, as well as upcoming elections with candidates like Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan, suggesting a positive trend for female representation in politics.

While reflecting on Obama’s earlier comments that highlighted a lack of readiness, Whitmer disagreed, emphasizing that gender alone wasn’t the defining factor in Harris’s defeat. “I don’t think it was just about gender,” she commented.

Whitmer, who is term-limited and unable to run for a third term, remarked that, at present, she isn’t planning to pursue another office. Nevertheless, there have been discussions about her as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidency. For now, though, her focus remains on serving Michigan and aiding party candidates in the forthcoming midterm elections.

Regarding how Democrats can gain traction in this year’s midterms, she mentioned the importance of focusing on “the basics.” “I think this applies not just in Michigan, but across the country,” she stated. “People expect their government to enhance their lives, and that’s our approach here in Michigan. I believe it could work elsewhere too.”
