A Michigan high school has taken serious action following a troubling video that surfaced, showing a varsity football player jumping over an opponent during a game, resulting in significant injuries. The officials from the state’s High School Athletics Association spoke about the incident on Monday.
The incident occurred during a game between Kalamazoo Central High School and Lakeshore High School, where a 15-year-old player, now identified as Colton, suffered two spinal fractures. His mother shared the news with a local television station, expressing her deep concern for her son.
The Michigan High School Athletics Association (MHSAA) stated, “Our staff have been in communication with both schools since Friday.” They emphasized that Kalamazoo Central is treating this matter with utmost seriousness, enacting measures that exceed what is typically mandated for dangerous sports conduct.
Kalamazoo Public Schools later issued a statement clarifying that the unacceptable actions came from individual players, not reflecting the overall values that the school holds for its athletes.
Officials pointed out that the actions taken were consistent with the school’s Code of Conduct. They also mentioned the importance of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity as core values expected from everyone involved.
Principal Greg Eding from Lakeshore Public Schools has communicated with students, staff, and families regarding the incident. He called the actions deliberate and against sporting regulations, showing disrespect towards the injured player.
The school hopes for a swift recovery for Colton and mentioned ongoing support for him during this time. Meanwhile, the incident has garnered significant media attention and reaction on social media, prompting discussions about proper conduct in student athletics.
There was an emphasis on the importance of accountability, with Kalamazoo Public Schools conducting disciplinary actions that adhere to both student policies and athletic regulations.
After the event, both teams came together to pray for the injured player, showcasing a moment of compassion amid the chaos.
Colton’s mother, Courtney Mims, shared her distress after viewing the video that captured the incident. She expressed how shaken she felt for her son and mentioned that he is expected to fully recover and continue playing this season.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Mims thanked those who reached out with their support and mentioned that a player from Kalamazoo Central had contacted her to express remorse, highlighting that individual actions shouldn’t define a whole team. She expressed gratitude for the community’s support, emphasizing the importance of resilience moving forward.
No students from Kalamazoo Central have been named in connection with the incident. A Lakeshore School official mentioned they are collaborating with other schools to navigate the situation.
