Michigan man convicted of killing 2, including teen

A jury has convicted a man of murder in the deaths of a northern Michigan teenage girl and a woman, including one whose body was buried in a backyard.

Prosecutors say Brad Srebnik knew what he was doing in the Alpena area during the summer of 2021, leading to him killing 17-year-old Bryn Bills and then killing his girlfriend, Abby. He also claimed to have killed Hill.

When the verdict was read Thursday in Alpena County Court, Srebnik decided to remain in jail. He could be sentenced to life in prison.

“The murders of Bryn Bills and Abby Hill shocked our community, and we hope these convictions bring peace and healing,” said Attorney General Dana Nessel.

A northern Michigan man has been found guilty of killing two people, including a 17-year-old girl.

Bills was last seen in August 2021, just before she turned 18. Her body was exhumed the following month in Joshua Wilgau’s garden in Alpena Township.

Hill, 31, was found dead in a wooded area that fall.

Mr. Wilgau was a key witness for the prosecution. He was also charged in Hill’s death, but agreed to a plea deal in exchange for a prison term with parole eligibility.

Wilgau told jurors that Srebnik strangled Bills. Mr. Willgau was present when Mr. Hill was shot, he said. Drug use seemed to be a common topic for this group.

Srebnik’s lawyer, Patrick Cherry, told the jury that Srebnik may have been framed by drug dealers who didn’t like Bills. Assistant Attorney General Daniel Hagaman-Clark called the theory “garbage.”
