Mickey Moniak expresses willingness to sacrifice a finger for the chance to play in the MLB playoffs

Rockies Struggling Early in 2026 Season

The Colorado Rockies wrapped up 2025 with the worst record in Major League Baseball. Recently, they suffered a 10-1 defeat against the Philadelphia Phillies, starting off the 2026 season at 2-5.

Historically, the Rockies have never clinched a National League West title or a World Series championship. They haven’t made it to the postseason since 2018, when they secured a wild-card spot. To make matters tougher, they share their division with the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Still, one of the Rockies’ rising talents expressed a strong desire to change the narrative in Colorado and reverse their playoff drought.

Mickey Moniak, drafted first overall in 2016, shared in a moment of enthusiasm that he would even consider drastic measures for the team’s success. “I’d go as far as to say I’d be willing to have parts of my body amputated if it meant guaranteeing a spot in the playoffs,” he said, reflecting his deep commitment to the team’s fortunes.

This season, however, Moniak missed six of the first seven games with a sprained right ring finger. He admitted, had the Rockies been more competitive, he might have approached his injury differently. “Oh, I should have just cut it out,” he reportedly said, revealing a sense of urgency about the team’s situation.

Moniak debuted with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020 before a trade sent him to the Los Angeles Angels in 2022. After contributing in 124 games throughout 2024, he signed with the Rockies before the 2025 season. Last year, he had a standout performance, recording a career-high 24 home runs and 68 RBIs, along with nine stolen bases.

Despite the challenging start, the Rockies recently snapped a losing streak with their third consecutive win against the Houston Astros, leveling their record to 6-6 early in 2026.
