The Toughest Driver Education Class Ever
A group of resourceful kids in Mississippi intervened heroically to stop a school bus when the driver passed out. This incident unfolded on a busy four-lane highway.
On Wednesday, as students were leaving Hancock Middle School in Kiln, Mississippi, bus driver Leah Taylor suffered an asthma attack and lost consciousness.
Without missing a beat, the children took immediate action.
Jackson Kasunabe, a sixth-grader aged 12, quickly leapt from his seat to grab the steering wheel as the bus began to veer off course.
“I didn’t pause to think about it,” Kasunabe recalled. “I just wanted to make sure no one got hurt.”
His classmate Darius Clark, also 12, managed to step on the brakes, guiding the bus safely off the road and into a parking lot.
Meanwhile, Clark’s sister, 13-year-old Kaylee, called 911, though she struggled to communicate with the operator due to the noise from her classmates.
Other students quickly assisted Taylor by locating her nebulizer and providing the necessary medication, while another classmate supported her head.
“They saved my life,” Taylor later expressed, acknowledging their quick thinking, which also protected their classmates.
Another student picked up Taylor’s ringing phone to inform the district’s transportation team about the situation.
“I am so grateful to the students. They saved my life and the lives of everyone on the bus,” stated Taylor, who is 46 years old.
The students are set to be honored at a pep rally on Friday and will enjoy a lunch outing next week at a restaurant of their choice.
“Their actions showed immense courage,” remarked principal Dr. Melissa Saucier. “They took initiative instead of waiting for someone else to help. It really speaks volumes about their character.”
