Middle school teacher in New York dismissed for allegedly making a 'racist' joke about slavery to two students

Teacher Dismissed Over Racist Comment

A teacher at a New York middle school was dismissed following complaints from a mother about a “racist” joke he allegedly made regarding slavery.

Dorothy Hall, the mother of an 8th grader, reached out to the media to call for action against the educators at Gaskill Preparatory School in Niagara Falls. She mentioned that her son is frightened to go back to school due to fears of retaliation.

“He’s afraid of retaliation,” Hall told reporters. “I’m asking the community to support my son and other students, as no child should have to experience this.” She expressed dissatisfaction with how her initial concerns were handled by the school district.

Hall insisted, “We need to ensure this science teacher is terminated. Currently, he’s on paid suspension, which I believe is not enough.” The Niagara Falls branch of the NAACP issued a statement in support of her stance.

“Let me be clear: this isn’t a joke. It’s a racially charged insult stemming from a painful history, inflicted upon children by their educators. This kind of behavior is harmful and entirely unacceptable,” part of the NAACP statement read.

They elaborated, stressing that exposing children to the traumas of slavery in a joking manner undermines their dignity and humanity. Such actions reveal a broader mindset that disregards the struggles of African Americans and erodes trust in the education system.

“I’m seeking accountability and justice, not just for myself, but most importantly for my son,” said Hall.

According to current records, the Niagara Falls City School District allocates over $19,000 per student, yet proficiency rates show that only 28% of students are competent in reading and merely 23% in math.
