Several illegal immigrants were recently arrested in Arizona after being accused of brutally assaulting two New York City police officers and fleeing town. fox news It was confirmed Monday evening.
The suspects were taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations at a Greyhound bus stop in Phoenix, Arizona.
The identities of the suspects have not been released, but they are believed to have participated in a vicious gang assault against two NYPD officers on January 27th. The incident was captured on nearby surveillance cameras and showed a large group of men outside. Blaze News previously reported that the immigration shelter threw punches and kicks at the officers.
Four of the immigrants were previously charged with assault and released without bail. A fifth suspect was later arrested and charged with attempted assault on a police officer. Police are still searching for multiple suspects who fled the scene and are believed to be headed to California.
Kenneth Gennaro, head of ICE’s New York field office, criticized the city’s “sanctuary” policy, arguing that it slows the agency’s ability to detain suspects. new york post report.
“We want to help. The problem is that city policy and state law prevent cooperation between the NYPD and ICE,” Henaro explained. “Hundreds of people are arrested every week in the city, and we can’t determine who is the most violent.”
Gennaro said authorities first learned about the attack from media reports.
“Unfortunately, much of the way we gather information at ICE is the same way we learn about cases, and that’s through the media. We’re Not Called Anymore [by the NYPD],” he added.
A local law enacted by former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, prevents the NYPD from cooperating with federal agencies on immigration enforcement operations.
“Once they return to the community, we have to go looking for them,” Genaro continued. “Instead of detaining these people on prison or subdivision grounds, we have to take them out into the communities and streets where, unfortunately, criminals are predominant.”
Mayor Eric Adams said Monday that current law prevents city resources from being used to assist ICE.
“How we want to proceed with this issue is a question that should be presented to Congress,” Adams said. “This bill was passed by the City Council. I understand my role and will share my opinions with the office and not use any veto or authority over any action to support the bill. I will exercise it, but this is a City Council bill that was passed.”
