Hawks Defeat Knicks in Close Game
ATLANTA — In light of the Knicks’ narrow 109-108 loss to the Hawks in Game 3 at State Farm Arena, Coach Mike Brown shared his thoughts on what went awry.
When asked about the Hawks’ effectiveness in limiting 3-pointers, Brown remarked that he wants his players to push the pace and drive towards the basket. He expressed disappointment, however, that when they did penetrate, they often didn’t get the fouls he felt were warranted.
“They’re working hard to get shutouts,” Brown noted. “When they push hard, we need to respond by driving the basketball. I think the referees have a tough job, but I noticed some fouls during our drives that went uncalled. It’s frustrating to see that discrepancy in a close game.” He referenced the 20-26 free-throw difference, particularly when every call matters in a one-possession game.
In the fourth quarter, Brown utilized a lineup that saw Jalen Brunson, Miles McBride, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges on the bench. This group had a notable impact, contributing a plus-24 in just 14 minutes.
Brown acknowledged their defensive efforts, saying, “They did well against the basketball. Atlanta was aggressive, trying to pressure us, making physical plays. It’s important not to play defensively against that kind of defense. You have to assert yourself and reach the basket. If they shut you down, you need to be ready to take a hard drive to the rim.”
Reflecting on the performance, he added, “That group did a really good job of pushing in transition and making defensive stops. We all need to appreciate that.”
When questioned about possibly starting McBride in future games, Brown responded cautiously, “I’m not considering that at the moment, but as I’ve mentioned, we need to keep all options open.”
