Political Tensions Erupt Over California Riots
On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed strong criticism of California’s Governor Gavin Newsom in light of ongoing riots in downtown Los Angeles. Johnson’s comments, which were aimed at Newsom’s handling of the situation, included a rather dramatic suggestion of being “tarred and feathered.”
Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, refrained from directly calling for Newsom’s arrest but made it clear that he believed the governor deserved significant backlash for his response to the riots. At a press conference, he remarked, “I’m not going to do a legal analysis of whether Gavin Newsom should be arrested, but he should be tormented and put on his feather.” This expression references a historical form of public humiliation frequently seen during America’s colonial period.
Although “tarred and feathered” can be interpreted more loosely today as a metaphor for severe criticism, Newsom seemed to take Johnson’s comments quite seriously. In a tweet, he remarked on the absurdity of skipping legal processes and jumping straight to punishment akin to the 1700s.
Johnson maintained that discussions around potential charges against Newsom were outside his primary focus. Still, he criticized the governor for supposedly obstructing federal law enforcement efforts. He stated, “He praises the bad guys and gets in the way of the good guys,” indicating that Newsom has acted counter to federal interests.
The escalating riots in Los Angeles began on Friday night and were triggered by a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions in major cities across the country. In a separate but related incident, Trump instructed the California State Guard to take control over the unrest, which further angered Newsom and led to a lawsuit filed by both him and California Attorney General Rob Bonta against the federal government.
Responding to Johnson’s remarks, which he deemed disrespectful, Newsom told reporters that it was vital to address current issues rather than engage in sensational tactics. He criticized Trump’s narrative, suggesting it leaned towards authoritarianism.
The political climate appears charged, as tensions between state and federal authorities flare up against the backdrop of civil unrest. Amid the chaos, the focus seems to shift not only on the rioting but also on the larger implications for governance and law enforcement in California.
