Davidson’s Policies on Transgender Issues Spark Controversy
In Washington, Mike Lawler, a Democrat aiming to challenge the Hudson Valley congressman, previously supported initiatives that enable children to discreetly communicate with schools regarding their transgender identities.
Beth Davidson, a Rockland County Councilwoman and candidate for the New York 17th Congressional District, played a key role in establishing the first policy on transgender issues while a member of the Nyack Public Schools Board. This policy is designed to be openly shared.
The policy mandates that school personnel create a voluntary yet confidential “gender support plan,” which aims to assist students in receiving support for their declared gender identity at school.
A “Gender Support Plan” form also includes a question about whether the parents of a student are aware of and accept their child’s gender reassignment. If not, it seeks to identify what modifications should be made.
The aim, as stated by the policy, is to achieve consensus between parents and students regarding the district’s acknowledgment of the student’s gender identity.
Transgender students are permitted to keep their gender status private from “other students, parents, and outside parties.”
Moreover, district policy grants rights such as “access to locker rooms aligned with their asserted gender identity at school.”
Additionally, the policy indicates that transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming students can request an alternative locker room or changing space.
Access to school sports teams will be evaluated on a “case-by-case” basis, adhering to state regulations.
Davidson has voiced her opinions on transgender matters. Notably, in 2023, she caused a rift among House Republicans by facilitating the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act, which limited insurance options for military personnel seeking transgender-related medical services.
When asked about the district’s policies, Davidson expressed pride in her efforts to support all Nyack Public Schools students and families, ensuring alignment with New York State law.
The Nyack Public School District opted not to comment when approached for remarks.
Davidson is competing in a crowded primary as she prepares to challenge Lawler in a highly contested congressional seat this November.
The New York state primary is scheduled for June 23rd.
According to NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole, “Radical Democrat Beth Davidson’s troubling policies pose a risk to the safety and welfare of schoolchildren across the Hudson Valley. New Yorkers can’t afford to have her in Congress.”
