Controversial Chaplain’s Sermon Ignites Political Debate in France

A secretly recorded sermon by a Paratrooper chaplain, urging men of faith to defend against what he perceives as a replacement of the French populace, has stirred significant political controversy following its publication by a left-leaning publication.

The French government is now pursuing disciplinary action, while a prominent leftist presidential candidate has called for arrests in response to the chaplain’s sermon, which many critics view as echoing the controversial “Great Replacement Theory.” This theory posits that mass migration is leading to what some call a demographic genocide of Europeans.

Filmed on October 7, 2025, at a cathedral in Carcassonne, a city known for its historic fortifications, the video just recently came to light as the media began focusing more on a conservative landscape—particularly after the election of a National Rally mayor there. In the footage, the chaplain addressed his “family,” referring to the soldiers from the 3rd Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment stationed in the area.

During a service celebrating the feast of Saint Michael, the patron saint of paratroopers, he urged attendees to remember the war memorial outside the church, which honors those who died defending France, and to ensure it remains a “beautiful country.” He criticized the current leadership, suggesting that instead of knights, France is now led by “incompetents” who do not embody the nation’s ideals or traditions.

He described these “incompetents” as ideologues who are out of touch, advocating for those present to challenge leftists they encounter by urging them to “stop talking” and “calm down.” His remarks elicited laughter from the congregation of soldiers, prompting him to continue with fervor.

“I’m getting carried away, but keep that courage and enthusiasm, otherwise we will be ridiculed. Otherwise, beautiful France will be mocked and others will take our place. In the Apostle’s world, it’s the law of the jungle,” he said, cautioning that it’s survival of the fittest.

He went on to express concern that without action, the values of freedom and equality could be undermined, as “nature abhors a vacuum.”

Despite believing he was speaking freely without recording devices, the chaplain was being filmed clandestinely. The footage was later leaked by a satirical French newspaper, leading to immediate backlash from the political left, who demanded accountability for both the chaplain and the soldiers who laughed during his sermon.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a leading figure in the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI) party, condemned the remarks as racist and seditious, suggesting that the chaplain should face imprisonment. He also advocated for consequences for soldiers who did not protest or challenge the speech.

One of Mélenchon’s associates, LFI politician Thomas Portes, also expressed outrage, alleging that the sermon aligned with the Great Replacement theory and implying it was influenced by the city’s recent political shift towards the National Rally. It’s worth noting, however, that the election of the new right-wing mayor had not occurred at the time of the sermon’s recording, though the mayor was present in the congregation.

The “Great Replacement” is a concept introduced by French writer Renaud Camus, and widely dismissed by the left as a conspiracy theory, which asserts that white Europeans are being replaced by migrants. In a previous interview, Camus clarified that he sees this concept not as a theory but as a grave reality that many critics fail to truly engage with.

Since the sermon surfaced, the French government has identified the chaplain and deemed his comments “inappropriate,” leading to an official reprimand. The Minister for the Armed Forces has indicated that further disciplinary measures are being sought.

The swift reaction from the French authorities, led by President Emmanuel Macron, may not be entirely unexpected. There has been a noted alignment between certain segments of the military and traditional, Catholic values, coupled with concerns regarding the potential implications of these views for national policy. Historical actions against military personnel for expressing opposition to mass migration add further context to the current situation.
