Michelle Obama and guest Julia Louis-Dreyfus, both incredibly wealthy, recently expressed their concerns regarding the challenges faced by American women today.
During an episode of Obama’s podcast, Dreyfus joined the dialogue about the struggles of American women. Obama pointed out the “mines and barriers” that hinder women, asserting that achieving success in the U.S. is particularly tough.
“Women face countless mines, barriers, obstacles, and restrictions,” the former First Lady remarked.
In a conversation with her brother and co-host, Craig Robinson, she highlighted the importance of understanding these issues, especially for fathers raising daughters.
Dreyfus chimed in, emphasizing that these “barriers” often exist without us even realizing it.
“I hope to… I recall people saying, ‘Oh, she’s a female doctor.’ But really, it’s just ‘She’s a doctor,'” Dreyfus added.
However, some social indicators seem to contradict Obama’s view.
For instance, by 2022, women had earned 58% of all bachelor’s degrees, compared to just 37% for men, indicating a significant shift in educational attainment. Furthermore, 60% of university graduates were women.
The job market appears fairly balanced, as per data from the Labor Statistics Bureau. In 2024, the participation rate among men aged 16-24 was 61.2%, while it was 59.6% for young women—showing only a slight edge for men.
In another discussion point, Obama insisted that women grow up with “less certainty” compared to men.
“We constantly hedge our confidence, unlike young men in their 30s who seem to carry a certainty we don’t,” she noted.
Many social media users expressed skepticism regarding Obama’s claims.
