Border Patrol Shooting in Minneapolis Raises Tensions

An armed individual was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, amid ongoing protests against the significant presence of federal immigration agents in the area.

On Saturday morning, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced this news via social media.

“I just spoke with the White House this morning after another horrific mass shooting by federal agents. The same thing happened in Minnesota. This is disgusting,” he stated. “The President must end this operation. Get thousands of violent, untrained police officers out of Minnesota. Now.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later shared more details about the incident in a longer post on social media.

“At 9:05 a.m. CT, DHS law enforcement officers in Minneapolis were conducting a targeted operation against an illegal alien wanted on suspicion of violent assault when the Border Patrol agents encountered an individual with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun,” the department mentioned, along with an image of the firearm found.

DHS labeled the encounter as an “armed struggle,” claiming that the suspect “violently resisted” as officers attempted to disarm him. While video footage of the incident has surfaced, it remains unclear who fired the shots. The department indicated that further information would be made available.

According to DHS, “Fearing for his life and the life and safety of his fellow officers, the officer fired defensive shots. Medics on the scene immediately provided medical attention to the individual, who was later pronounced dead,” they added. “The suspect had two magazines on him and lacked identification.”

“This seems to be a case where an individual attempted to inflict maximum harm on law enforcement,” the statement continued.

The man was identified as being 51 years old. Video footage from the incident showed him lying on the ground after being shot.

Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, who has announced her candidacy for governor, reacted to the situation, saying, “To the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans who have remained silent: Get ICE out of your state now.”

“There has been another shooting incident involving federal agents in Minneapolis, and I am working to obtain more information. We will update as soon as possible. To all the silent Trump administration and Congressional Republicans: Get ICE out of your states now,” she tweeted.

In a subsequent post, she urged President Donald Trump and his associates to watch the disturbing footage of the incident, adding that children were hiding and schools were closing.

“The world is watching. Thousands of citizens have been stopped and harassed. Local police can no longer do their jobs. Get ICE out of Minnesota now, and Republicans in Congress, stop your silence and complicity,” she emphasized.

This marks the second time in January that a shooting involving immigration authorities has occurred in Minneapolis.

Earlier in the month, 37-year-old Renee Good allegedly followed an ICE agent and blocked a road with her vehicle. After officers instructed her to exit the car, she, under the encouragement of her partner, refused and accelerated towards them. Following a crash, a man was seen firing shots, and he was later hospitalized with internal injuries.

The protests, already heated, intensified after Good’s death, with anti-ICE activists calling it murder. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged ICE to “stop the f***ing up,” although he pushed for peaceful protests. Governor Walz indicated that the state was “at war” with the federal government.
