Minneapolis Mayor’s Strong Reaction to ICE Shooting Incident
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was direct in his response to the recent shooting involving an ICE officer during an immigration check. At a passionate news conference, he stated, “ICE, get the fk out of Minneapolis. We don’t want you here.”
He questioned the agency’s presence, saying, “You claim you’re here to ensure security, but you’re doing the opposite.” His comments came after footage was released showing the shooting of a 37-year-old woman who attempted to flee in her SUV when ordered by several ICE agents to exit the vehicle.
Frey wasn’t alone in voicing his concerns; many local leaders reacted similarly. The released video depicted an ICE officer firing at the woman at close range while she tried to drive away.
According to Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, the woman was labeled a protester who tried to impede ICE operations in a neighborhood. She is now facing charges of attempting to harm the officers involved.
McLaughlin described the incident as an act of domestic terrorism, claiming a “violent mob” member used her vehicle as a weapon against law enforcement.
However, Frey countered this perspective, asserting that ICE agents are the real instigators of fear and violence. “People are being hurt. Families are being torn apart,” he said, emphasizing the emotional toll on long-time residents. “And now someone is dead, and it’s on you.”
He continued, highlighting the agency’s duty to prevent further harm, pledging to pursue justice in the wake of this tragedy.
