Church in Minnesota Responds to Disruption from Protesters

A church in St. Paul, Minnesota, has issued a statement following a recent protest that disrupted their Sunday service. The church emphasized its commitment to preaching the gospel despite facing threats and urged government leaders to safeguard freedom of worship.

The incident unfolded when a group of demonstrators opposed to ICE entered the church during the service, marching to the front, chanting slogans, and confronting the congregation, which understandably alarmed families and children present. The protesters expressed their discontent regarding the pastor’s connection with federal immigration enforcement.

In a response posted on their website, the church, led by Pastor Jonathan Parnell, declared that the actions of the demonstrators crossed a line from protest into illegal behavior, representing an assault on religious freedom. The statement affirmed their dedication to worship, stating, “The words ‘We worship Jesus’ are the chief banner of our church.” It went on to describe the protesters’ behavior as shameful, frightening, and intolerable.

The church asserted that they are open to discussing current issues and how the teachings of Jesus can address complex societal problems. They concluded their message by calling on local, state, and national authorities to ensure that churches can conduct their services without interference.

The statement further highlighted the church’s stance, asserting, “Church buildings should be places of peace where worshipers can hear and experience the message of Jesus.” They also mentioned they are consulting with legal counsel regarding potential next steps.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s office distanced itself from the actions of the protesters, reiterating the governor’s ongoing support for peaceful protests. He stated that while people are entitled to express their views, he does not condone disrupting places of worship.

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced an investigation into the matter and intends to pursue charges against the protesters involved.
