Gun Violence Response in Minnesota

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced on Friday that it’s time for the state legislature to take “serious action” in light of the tragic shootings at a Catholic school in Minneapolis this week.

Walz, who is a Democrat and a former candidate for vice president in 2024, emphasized on X-Post that now is the moment for action at the Capitol against gun violence. He mentioned the possibility of convening a special session next month following the shooting at Announcement Catholic Church.

This incident resulted in the deaths of an eight-year-old boy, Fletcher Merkel, and a ten-year-old girl, Harper Moysky. In addition to these tragic losses, eight others were injured, including fifteen children.

In the wake of the shooting, the shooter’s mother, Mary Grace Westman, had not cooperated with the police and engaged an attorney, according to reports. Minneapolis Police Chief Christopher Gators stated at a press conference on Friday that he has had a “conversation” with Westman, facilitated by the Minnesota Department of Safety’s Criminal Arrests Department, but he could not share further details.

When asked about changes implemented since the George Floyd protests in 2020, Mayor Jacob Frey admitted that there haven’t been any significant changes made.

Gators noted that the flow of information has greatly improved since the incident and acknowledged that the governor provided immediate assistance post-shooting. Additionally, he mentioned that the police department is enhancing patrols around all schools and religious institutions.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Walz’s office for comments regarding this situation.
