Community Mourns Following Minneapolis School Shooting
In the wake of a tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, staff, residents, and local leaders gathered to honor the young victims. This somber event took place the day after the shooting, which left two children dead and many others injured.
Among those present were Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz. The governor characterized the incident as an unimaginable tragedy, prompting him to order state flags to be flown at half-staff to show respect for the victims. He also called on the community to unite in support of the grieving families and to work towards preventing such heart-wrenching events in the future.
Mayor Frey condemned the attack as a senseless act of violence that has deeply impacted the community. He used this moment to advocate for stronger gun control measures, emphasizing the need for public safety as a priority.
“I don’t intend to cut off any thoughts or prayers. It’s all of us to see this,” he stated.
Frey pressed lawmakers to take significant steps toward stricter gun control policies, although neither he nor Governor Walz addressed the gunman’s mental health or gender identity during their speeches.
The shooting occurred during a morning mass for students, marking the start of the school year. Just moments into the service, a gunman fired through a stained glass window, tragically resulting in the deaths of two children, aged 8 and 10, and injuring numerous others. That evening, a community gathering took place at the Academy of Holy Angels, where parents and children joined in prayer for the victims.
“Our children were taken away from us suddenly and violently. Come quickly to our aid,” the priest urged during the service.
A large crowd congregated at Lynhurst Park for a candlelight interfaith gathering, where community leaders reiterated their call for anti-gun legislation. Mayor Frey revisited his earlier sentiments, attributing the violence to the accessibility of firearms rather than the individual’s actions.
“Don’t let anyone tell you it’s not about guns!” he exclaimed. “When you have more guns than people in America, you have problems.”
While Frey acknowledged that the shooter faced gender identity issues, he refrained from labeling the individual as transgender. Speculation online emerged regarding whether the shooter was undergoing hormone therapy, which some believe could worsen mental health conditions. Police records confirm that the shooter, identified as a biological male, had sought a legal name change previously.
“This is not about hating any community. This is about loving our children,” Frey emphasized, asserting the urgent need for genuine gun reform.
During a press conference, Frey also spoke against the hatred targeting the transgender community in the aftermath of the shooting, promoting empathy instead of division.
“We should not operate from a place of hatred for anyone. We should run from a place of love for our children,” he said.
Supported by other officials, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison also voiced discontent over the pervasive gun violence while defending those who use the phrase “thoughts and prayers.” However, he also boldly advocated for a ban on assault rifles.
“I pray for the Supreme Court that will not let guns run rampant on our streets,” he noted.
Authorities continue to investigate the motives behind the shooter’s actions. They discovered multiple videos in which he expressed disturbing sentiments and displayed his arsenal. Phrases like “Where is your God?” and threats against public figures were noted in those videos.
Shortly after their release, the FBI removed these videos, but they quickly reappeared online. Accompanying the clips were recordings of the shooter flipping through notebooks filled with a manifesto, some of which contained ominous sketches.
One notebook featured a layout of the church attacked and eerie drawings of firearms alongside symbols of Christianity.
The investigation is ongoing as the community grapples with the aftermath of this horrific event.
