A Republican candidate in Minnesota has suspended his gubernatorial campaign, stating that party leaders are targeting citizens as the Trump administration intensifies its efforts against illegal immigration.
Chris Madell announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from the race. He expressed concern that while he initially supported the objectives of the state’s immigration enforcement initiative, “Operation Metro Surge” has strayed significantly from its original intent to tackle genuine public safety issues, according to CBS News.
“Many Americans, particularly people of color, are living in fear,” he said. “They feel the need to carry proof of their citizenship. This is not right. ICE is allowing its agents to search homes based on civil warrants that require just a Border Patrol agent’s signature. This approach is unconstitutional and simply wrong,” he stated.
Madel claimed to have heard from numerous American citizens in Minnesota who faced detention simply because of their skin color.
This comes after federal immigration agents took an American citizen into custody at his home in St. Paul, identified as Chongli “Scott” Tao, as reported by the Associated Press on January 19.
However, the report later clarified that the Department of Homeland Security characterized the ICE operation at Mr. Tao’s residence as a “targeted operation” aimed at finding two convicted sex offenders.
Video footage displays images of Mr. Tao after his detention alongside other individuals reportedly residing with him.

Madel referred to Operation Metro Surge as an “unmitigated disaster” in a video statement, even as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have made multiple arrests of illegal immigrants throughout the state.
It’s also worth mentioning that Madel has faced significant criticism from state Republicans regarding his political donations to the Dallas Express, as reported on January 17.
“In 2021, Madel contributed to Governor Tim Walz’s reelection campaign, which occurred after Walz enacted strict COVID-19 measures, including a statewide lockdown and mask mandates, while continuing to enforce restrictions on daily life and businesses,” the article stated.
“Moreover, campaign finance records indicate that Madel donated to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential campaign.”
