Minnesota Governor Confirms Assassination of State Leader

Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz announced on Saturday that state leader Emelita Melissa Hortman and her husband were tragically killed in a shooting believed to be politically motivated.

“My friend and colleague, Melissa Hortman, and her husband Mark were shot dead this morning in what looks like a politically driven assassination,” Waltz stated during a press conference.

“Our state has lost a significant leader, and I’ve lost a dear friend,” he added, expressing his sorrow.

In Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, thousands are reportedly still evacuated as police and SWAT teams pursue the shooter. The gunman escaped through the back of the Hortman home after a brief encounter with law enforcement.

President Trump was informed about the incident and stated that both the Justice Department and the FBI are involved in the investigation. “This horrifying shooting seems like a targeted attack,” he noted. “Our Attorney General Pam Bondi and the FBI are on it, and those responsible will face the full force of the law.”

“Such violence will not be tolerated in the United States. God bless the wonderful people of Minnesota,” Trump added.

Additionally, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot multiple times at their home in Champlin, just eight miles from Hortman’s location. Fortunately, they are alive but facing serious injuries.

Governor Waltz mentioned that local, state, and federal authorities are working collaboratively on this case. “We are committed to keeping Minnesotans informed as this situation develops. We must ensure accountability for those responsible and prevent such tragedies in Minnesota and beyond,” he remarked.

Authorities have advised residents not to open their doors to police officers they do not recognize, emphasizing that trust is paramount, and any impersonation is a serious betrayal. Bob Jacobson, Minnesota’s Public Safety Chair, stressed, “If you see something suspicious, call 911 immediately.”

Reactions have come from various quarters. Gabby Giffords, a former senator who survived a gun attack in 2011, expressed her dismay, saying she was “terrified and heartbroken” by the events. She urged for justice and called attention to the dangers targeted shootings pose to democracy.

“Attacks on lawmakers threaten everything that this country represents,” Giffords asserted. “Leaders need to condemn the violent extremism we’re witnessing.”

Ken Martin, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, also shared his thoughts, highlighting that many would feel the impact of Hortman’s death. “Speaker Hortman was an exceptional leader, always advocating for children’s meals, women’s rights, and the protection of Minnesota families,” he remarked.

“This is a significant loss, and Minnesotans will feel it deeply,” Martin concluded.
