Minnesota's Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan condemns ICE actions amid state fraud investigation

Scandal Rocking Minnesota’s Executive Branch

With the Minnesota executive branch dealing with a growing Somali fraud scandal centered on “feeding our future,” Governor Tim Walz’s top deputy took to Twitter. In her post, she criticized federal immigration enforcement and some Democratic colleagues who voted early and expressed gratitude toward ICE for their efforts.

The Walz administration is embroiled in a significant welfare fraud case. Federal prosecutors have discovered a “scheme upon scheme” orchestrated by a Somali-run nonprofit, which misappropriated hundreds of millions in taxpayer funds from child nutrition and Medicaid housing programs.

Initially, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan blamed former President Donald Trump for making disparaging remarks about Minnesota’s Somali community, claiming he aimed to “distract” the public from rising living costs.

Flanagan stated, “ICE is raiding restaurants, lurking outside schools, and detaining American citizens,” in a Monday tweet.

Understanding the Minnesota Welfare Scandal

She attributed part of the problem to the Laken Riley Act, a law inspired by a Georgia student’s murder by an undocumented immigrant, which she argues has led to heightened ICE actions across the nation.

Flanagan said, “Mr. Trump chose the Laken-Reilly Act as the first bill of his administration for one reason: He wanted to legitimize his mass deportation program.”

The Consequences of Anti-Fraud Measures

“Everything we voted for in this bill perpetuated the chaos we see now,” she added, while also criticizing ICE’s actions in response to a raid in Minnesota that involved the detention of four Americans.

Addressing Rep. Angie Craig of Shakopee, she remarked, “With all due respect, Congressman, you voted with Republicans this year to strip immigrants of due process and praise President Trump’s ICE. Are you angry now?”

Operation Glacier’s Impact

Flanagan asserted, “Voting has consequences. Minnesotans deserve better.” Craig was among 75 representatives who supported a resolution that acknowledges the importance of collaboration between state and local law enforcement and federal agencies like ICE for public safety.

Both Flanagan and Craig are vying to succeed retiring U.S. Senator Tina Smith. If elected, Flanagan, who is of Ojibwe descent, would make history as the first Native American senator.

Ongoing Reactions

The situation in question involved ICE agents reportedly following a family home in Burnsville, where detentions took place. Fox News Digital has requested comment from DHS regarding the broader operation.

Craig described the incident as “inhumane,” labeling “Trump’s ICE” as “out of control.” In a previous comment, Flanagan responded to Trump’s labeling of Minnesota and its Somali community as a “hellhole,” suggesting, “The truth is, hell could be any room for you (Donald Trump).”

Broader Implications of the Scandal

House Oversight Chairman James Comer discussed the federal investigation into the fraud scandal, claiming that the state’s lack of action allowed criminals, including Somali terrorists, to misappropriate nearly $1 billion from taxpayers, all while children suffered.
