Miranda Devine: Anthony Fauci cannot evade his original COVID falsehood

Dr. Anthony Fauci might deserve indictment over his involvement in the COVID-19 pandemic’s origins, yet the likelihood of that happening seems slim. His efforts to obscure this issue lead to complexities that many prefer to avoid.

With a preemptive pardon secured from President Biden, Fauci is insulated from federal prosecution. However, the recent indictment of David Morens, a former associate of Fauci, on federal conspiracy charges related to covering up Fauci’s financing of risky gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab—where the virus likely originated—has sparked some hope that Fauci may still face scrutiny from the Justice Department.

Notably, former President Trump has declared Biden’s last-minute pardon ineffective, potentially exposing Fauci to perjury charges regarding his testimony before Congress in 2024.

Regardless of this political maneuvering, Fauci’s critic, Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky, is gearing up to file a lawsuit to subpoena Fauci for another set of grillings under oath. This would compel Fauci to discuss his funding of controversial research through the EcoHealth Alliance and his efforts to undermine the lab leak theory.

Any testimony given after January 2025 could put him at risk of perjury.

Fauci’s superior, Francis Collins, isn’t protected by a pardon, placing him in a similar bind.

Recently, there was stunning testimony from CIA whistleblower James Erdmann who accused Fauci of being part of a multi-agency cover-up regarding the virus’s origins.

Erdmann claimed that Fauci’s involvement was deliberate, alleging that Fauci attempted to sway the CIA’s analysis away from the lab leak theory towards a dubious notion of natural origins. Erdmann testified that Fauci provided a “contradictory list of experts” who favored the discredited Nature Medicine publication, which dismissed the lab leak theory.

Many credible virologists have long considered the idea of a lab leak as the most plausible explanation. Professor Nikolai Petrovsky, for instance, expressed surprise that the initial COVID-19 strain, identified in late 2019, was already fully equipped to infect humans.

Other experts have noted that the new coronavirus carries unique genetic markers that suggest it might have been engineered for immediate infectivity.

Erdmann, who worked in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence earlier this year, recounted how CIA analysts consistently identified a lab leak as the likely source of the virus, only to have senior management overrule their conclusions.

Moreover, former Trump aide Peter Navarro pointed out that Fauci did not inform Trump or the coronavirus task force about the gain-of-function research happening in Wuhan nor did he disclose information suggesting that the virus was possibly lab-engineered, as revealed in Fauci’s emails from January 2020.

Fauci’s Dismissal of Criticism

When criticized, Fauci has infamously stated that an attack on him equates to an assault on science.

One might expect some humility, yet instead, he continues to promote his self-serving memoirs and make keynote speeches. Recently, he received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

Adding an ironic twist, Fauci was invited to perform at Georgetown University in a reading of Oedipus Rex, mirroring the tragic character Tiresias, a blind prophet who confronts uncomfortable truths.

Back in 2020, Trump faced mockery for suggesting the virus originated from a lab, and Scientific American criticized these claims as unfounded.

The elaborate cover-up surrounding the coronavirus has drawn significant commentary, including from independent researchers like Hans Manke, who noted that a shared disdain for Trump led to widespread dismissal of his theories.

Consequently, the Democratic Party has heavily invested in narratives that discredit Trump and his assertions.

Various issues—like the Ukraine conflict and climate change debates—are met with skepticism in the media, where Trump has often found himself portrayed as erratic. Yet, time and again, his perspectives have proven to be accurate.

In fact, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently acknowledged that previous catastrophic climate predictions were unjustifiable, even as figures like Al Gore flip between various alarmist messages.

This dissonance has left many young people shaken by exaggerated forecasts, raising questions about how they might reclaim a sense of normalcy.

It’s not surprising that activists like Greta Thunberg have backtracked on their alarming predictions. By the time misinformation is unearthed, those responsible usually move on, leaving chaos in their wake.
