Missing 75-year-old man found in Maine bog after 4 days

A 75-year-old Maine man who had been missing for four days has been found “alive and in good health,” authorities said.

Michael Altmeyer, of New Sharon, was seen leaving his home on July 8 on his way to a meeting in Weld, where he never arrived, and Mount Blue State Park staff found Altmeyer’s vehicle a few days later at the park’s overlook on Center Hill Road in Weld, according to a Facebook post from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The Maine Department of Wildlife Service launched a search for Altmeyer on Friday morning. At about 3:45 p.m., Game Warden Cale Hamilton and his police dog, Ash, found Altmeyer lying on the ground and “unable to get up” “along the marsh, approximately 3/4 mile from where the vehicle was parked,” the department said in a statement.

A Maine Forest Service helicopter landed in the swamp and emergency personnel administered first aid before placing Altmeyer in an ambulance and taking him to a local hospital, where he remained under observation overnight.

Investigators believe Altmeyer fell down an embankment on Monday and became disoriented.

“Emergency responders said Altmeyer was in remarkably good health, despite having spent the past four days lying in the nearby marshland,” the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Service said.
