Missing Teacher Found Dead Amid Winter Storm

An elementary school teacher who had gone missing was discovered deceased in the snow in Kansas on Friday, just a short distance from where surveillance footage last captured her. A major winter storm was sweeping across the country at the time.

The body of 28-year-old Rebecca Lauber was located on Sunday, obscured by snow in a wooded area in Emporia. This area is close to where she was last seen leaving a bar several days prior. Police reported that K-9 Daisy from the Kansas Department of K-9 Search and Rescue was instrumental in finding Lauber.

Emporia Police Chief Edward Owens expressed condolences, stating, “While this was not the outcome we all hoped and prayed for, our thoughts and prayers are with the family.” He added a personal note, wishing he could have found her sooner.

Lauber, a second-grade teacher at Riverside Elementary School, is believed to have succumbed to hypothermia within hours of her disappearance. Authorities indicated that her family has been notified, and an autopsy is underway to ascertain the exact cause of death.

She was reported missing early Saturday morning after leaving a Town Royal bar on foot, without her wallet, phone, or jacket. The last sighting of her was captured by surveillance cameras during a severe winter storm around 11:37 p.m.

At the time she left the bar, temperatures were about 3 degrees Celsius, with a wind chill making it feel like -13 degrees Celsius. The police conveyed their gratitude to the community for their support during the search efforts.

The Emporia Public School District remarked that Lauber’s passing resonated deeply across the district. They stated, “Our hearts are with Ms. Lauber’s family, friends, students, and all those touched by her dedication to life and education.” The district pledged to focus on supporting students and staff as they cope with this tragic news, providing counselors and support teams to assist those in need.

Lauber’s death is part of a series of fatalities linked to the harsh nationwide snowstorm, known as Winter Storm Fern. This storm impacted 34 states, resulting in at least 13 deaths and leaving millions without power.

In other regions affected by the storm, at least two fatalities from storm-related hypothermia were reported in Louisiana. Additionally, five individuals were discovered dead in New York due to severe cold. Michigan authorities announced the recovery of 19-year-old Lukas Mattsson, a University of Michigan student who had disappeared under similar circumstances.

Heavy snow and sleet affected over two-thirds of the country, leading to more than 11,600 flight cancellations by Sunday evening. The powerful storm also caused widespread power outages, affecting over 1 million customers, particularly in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
