On Monday, Mississippi became the fourth Republican-led state to send National Guard troops to Washington, following President Trump’s announcements aimed at combating crime in the capital.
“I have authorized the deployment of around 200 Mississippi National Guard soldiers to Washington, DC,” he shared on Social Platform X.
“It’s evident that crime is spiraling out of control, and action must be taken to address it,” he added. “Americans are entitled to a safe capital that we can all be proud of. Our National Guard does an exceptional job enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement efforts.”
Over the weekend, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrissey (R), South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster (R), and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) also announced plans to send hundreds of soldiers. This move would bolster the 800 National Guard members already deployed to DC. Each of these Republican leaders indicated they were responding to requests from the Trump administration.
Last week, Trump unveiled a significant initiative to address crime in Washington, highlighting a federal takeover of the city’s police department and the addition of federal agents alongside National Guard support.
“Just four days ago, Washington, DC was the most dangerous ‘city’ in the U.S.,” he posted early on True Social Monday. “Now, for the moment, it’s likely the safest, improving by the hour!”
Attorney General Pam Bondy noted on Monday that federal authorities had made 137 arrests over the weekend as part of this initiative. She claimed that the total number of arrests had exceeded 400.
“We’re not slowing down,” she stated. “We are dedicated to restoring safety in DC!”
Despite Trump’s focus on crime in the capital, local officials have been contesting his portrayal of a violent surge. According to district statistics, which Trump has dismissed as “fake,” violent crime has actually decreased by about 26% compared to the same time last year.
