Mississippi teenager faces capital murder charges in the deaths of an elderly couple.

A teenager from Mississippi, Cordarius Hobbs, 17, allegedly broke into the home of an elderly couple, resulting in their deaths before he engaged in a standoff with the police, according to officials.

The incident occurred on June 3, when Hobbs is said to have entered the residence of 74-year-old Billy Blair and his 71-year-old wife, Virginia Carol Blair, in Mendenhall, Mississippi. Family members couldn’t reach the couple, prompting the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office to dispatch deputies around 12:24 p.m. on that day.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers reportedly came under gunfire. Bailey Martin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety, noted that a robbery was in progress, leaving deputies and local civilians pinned down.

Rankin County Sheriff Brian Bailey indicated that Hobbs initially claimed he would surrender at the front door but instead fled from the back, leading to a pursuit in which one deputy lost his life.

Hobbs was ultimately apprehended after being shot by a Mississippi State Trooper and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

He now faces serious charges, including two counts of capital murder, as well as robbery and multiple counts of aggravated assault—targeting not only law enforcement but also an elderly individual.

The family of the deceased couple expressed their grief on Facebook, stating that they are “devastated, hurt, and heartbroken, but we are not alone.”

A friend of the couple, Jason Buzbee, remembered them as incredibly kind people, describing Billy and Virginia as selfless individuals who would go out of their way to help others. “This is just a tragedy,” he said, as the community grapples with the news of their loss.
