Mitchell Robinson’s Role in Knicks’ Struggles

ATLANTA — The Knicks are facing a tricky situation with Mitchell Robinson.

His performance hasn’t exactly stood out, particularly during the Knicks’ Game 3 defeat at State Farm Arena. A part of the issue seems to be how he interacts on the court with Karl-Anthony Towns.

Despite Towns contributing 21 points and bolstering the Knicks’ offense, Robinson barely made an impact. He only played the last 9:25 of the game, managing just two points and four rebounds in 11 minutes in a nail-biting 109-108 loss.

When coach Mike Brown was asked about Robinson’s absence, he stated, “We needed contributions from everyone. Ultimately, we chose to feature KAT. He was effective in the second half and logged significant minutes.”

In contrast to this game, back in Game 2, Robinson had a solid showing with 12 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, along with seven rebounds. That seemed to be what was needed.

His rebounding strength and offensive potential played a crucial role then. But, after just three days, that performance vanished. His sole basket came during a roll to the hoop from Jalen Brunson with fewer than four minutes to go in the first half. Strikingly, he didn’t even attempt a free throw throughout the whole game.

Interestingly, the Hawks didn’t resort to their hack-a-mitch strategy, as Robinson wasn’t on the floor during the crucial final moments of the second half.

Before the game, Brown mentioned existing issues, like the struggle between Robinson and Towns sharing the same court, suggesting that the only way for Robinson to get more playtime would involve benching Towns.

“Their combination is not working well right now,” Brown commented earlier. “So for matchup reasons and other factors, we’ve opted not to play them together during this series. Ultimately, it comes down to a choice.”

This dilemma became evident during the game. The Knick’s struggles are real, and the management must figure out how to resolve this situation as they move forward.
