Trevor Lee signed with Major League Wrestling seven months ago, and he’s wasted little time making an impression. Since joining the promotion, he has faced notable names including Kushida, Austin Aries and Místico, while also winning the MLW Southern Crown Championship.
Lee says his run has gone well so far. He had been hoping for the right opportunity, and feels he’s been able to show what he can do over the past few months. This Saturday, he’ll get another chance when he faces New Japan Pro-Wrestling star Yota Tsuji at MLW’s Saturday Night SuperFight.
Lee sees the match as a kind of job interview. Tsuji is the reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion, and Lee believes facing one of New Japan’s top wrestlers is about as significant an opportunity as he could ask for. He was the one who called Tsuji out for the bout.
Tsuji’s résumé includes two IWGP Heavyweight Championship reigns, two IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship reigns, and one reign each with the IWGP Intercontinental and NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team titles.
The match is non-title, but a win over Tsuji could put Lee in the conversation for a shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Tsuji has drawn interest from other challengers, including Boltin Oleg and Kenny Omega.
Lee says he would welcome the chance to wrestle for New Japan. He has competed for many promotions during his career, but has never wrestled in Japan. Beating Tsuji, he said, would be a strong way to introduce himself—and show he can do it again.
Lee and Tsuji’s bout is one of seven scheduled for Saturday Night SuperFight. MLW World Heavyweight Champion Killer Kross is also set to defend his title against Josh Bishop in a last man standing match.
Lee expects the Chicago crowd to bring plenty of energy as MLW presents its own take on professional wrestling. Saturday Night SuperFight will stream on Veeps from 8 p.m. ET.
