Bayer has been ordered by a Georgia ju judge to pay about $2.1 billion to the plaintiff who alleged that the company's Roundup weed killer caused cancer, the plaintiff's legal company said late Friday.
The verdict Bayer said to appeal Saturday is one of the largest legal settlements issued in a Roundup-related case, and the group's latest setback among the world's largest seed and pesticide manufacturers.

Bayer paid about $10 billion to resolve the disputed claim that Roundup would cause cancer, based on the herbicide glyphosate. More than 60,000 more cases are pending as the group secures a $5.9 billion legal provision.

The German Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Group acquired Roundup in 2018 as part of the $63 billion acquisition of US pesticide company Monsanto.
The Georgia verdict includes $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages.
In a statement, Bayer said he opposed the ju-search verdict because it contradicted the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence and the consensus of regulatory bodies and scientific assessments around the world.

“We believe there will be strong debate about the appeal to overturn this verdict and eliminate or reduce excessive unconstitutional victimization awards,” he said.
He said the losses if final judgment was reached were reduced by 90% overall compared to the original ju judge award.
Earlier this month, Bayer told lawmakers it could halt Roundup sales unless it enhances legal protections for financial analysts and people close to Reuters.
