Polls Show Mixed Reactions to U.S. Attacks on Iran
Almost a month has gone by since the U.S. and Israel initiated military strikes on Iran, and recent national polls reveal a significant disapproval among Americans regarding these actions.
The divide between Democrats and Republicans over the situation in the Middle East remains stark. A national poll conducted by FOX News from March 20 to 23 indicated that 42% of voters approve of the U.S. military action against Iran, while 58% are opposed, including nearly 40% who strongly object to it. This marks a shift from a prior poll that showed equal support for military actions last month.
Interestingly, a Quinnipiac University survey conducted around the same time found that 39% opposed military endeavors while support was at only 35%. Additionally, a Reuters/Ipsos poll from March 20 to 22 indicated that a substantial 61% of respondents did not back military action.
In another survey by AP/NORC, about 60% of participants felt that the military actions have overstepped boundaries, with just over a quarter believing they were justified, and 13% believing more force was necessary.
A Pew Research Center poll from March 16 to 22 revealed that 61% disapprove of President Trump’s approach to the situation, with just 37% approving. The recent attacks have led to significant casualties, including the deaths of major Iranian leaders and a substantial weakening of their military capabilities.
In retaliation, Iran has launched attacks on Israel and other neighboring countries, even hitting energy infrastructure across the Persian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz has become perilous for commercial activities, which affects about 20% of the global oil supply, further inflating fuel prices both in the U.S. and globally.
On a recent occasion, President Trump remarked that Iran seems to be “looking for a deal” to halt the hostilities. Despite the bipartisan criticism he faces from Democratic leaders regarding his handling of the conflict, many Republicans still back his strategies, a sentiment mirrored in voter opinions.
The FOX News poll highlights this division; a striking 77% of Republicans were in favor of military actions, whereas only 12% of Democrats and 28% of independents shared this view. Support among Republicans varies widely, with 90% of MAGA supporters backing the military actions compared to 52% of other Republicans. Similar patterns were noted in the Quinnipiac poll, where 86% of Republicans approved of the strikes compared to only 28% of independents and a mere 5% of Democrats.
