Poll Shows Majority of Catholic Voters Back Trump’s Immigration Policies

A recent survey for the Catholic Television Network indicates that most Catholic voters are in favor of President Donald Trump and his approach to immigration.

The poll, released on Thursday by EWTN News and RealClear Opinion Research, revealed that many Catholic voters are leaning towards Trump’s tough stance on illegal immigration, which they believe is causing significant issues in American society.

Conducted among 1,000 Catholic individuals between November 9th and 11th, the results showed that around 54% supported “large-scale detention and deportation of illegal immigrants,” while only 30% opposed the policy, and 17% fell somewhere in between, expressing neither support nor opposition.

The reporting continued, referencing the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states that affluent nations have a responsibility to “welcome foreigners whenever possible.” It also emphasizes that immigrants should show “gratitude for the material and spiritual heritage of the host country,” adhere to its laws, and contribute to the community.

Additionally, it pointed out that “Political authorities may impose various legal conditions on the exercise of migration rights in the public interest for which they are responsible.” This aligns with a statement from U.S. Catholic bishops acknowledging that the government has both a legal right and a moral obligation to regulate immigration “for the common good.”

In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, Trump reportedly secured the Catholic vote by a 15-point margin after defeating former Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, as indicated by exit polls.

One Catholic voter expressed to EWTN News, “We really need immigration reform. We really need border control.” This sentiment resonates with many supporters of the current administration’s policies.

Comparatively, reports suggest that in 2020, advisors to former President Joe Biden warned that his immigration strategies might result in “chaos,” a caution he chose to overlook. This contrasts with the strong political narrative of Trump, who has utilized striking images of open borders and reports of trafficking to galvanize his campaign for re-election.

According to reports, since Trump took office in January, over 2.5 million undocumented immigrants have left the United States.
