A recent survey by Cygnal indicates that most voters in the run-up to the 2026 general election favor deporting illegal immigrants from the United States, including a significant number of swing voters.
When asked, “Do you support or oppose the deportation of illegal immigrants back to their country of origin?” an analysis showed that overall, 63.5% are in favor while 30.8% are against the idea. The remainder, about 5.8%, were undecided.
Support for deportation is particularly strong among Republicans, with 90% in favor, and 71% expressing strong support. Independents follow with 61% supporting the action, while 32% strongly back it. On the other hand, a majority of Democrats—55%—oppose deportation, including 25% who are strongly against it. Only 27% of Democrats are in favor of deporting illegal immigrants.
Notably, among swing voters, 66% are in support of deporting illegal immigrants, whereas 25% oppose it. Among those who support deportation, 30% do so strongly.
Additionally, 50% of Black voters and 43% of Hispanic voters also expressed support for deportation.
The survey took place from May 6-8, 2025, with 1,500 general election voters participating, and has a margin of error of 2.51%.
This comes as the Trump administration introduces methods to encourage illegal immigrants to self-report. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced a program offering travel assistance and scholarships for those voluntarily leaving the country. Officials argue that this approach is more economical for taxpayers compared to traditional deportation methods.
According to their statement:
Self-deportation is a dignified way to exit the United States while avoiding encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). They project that utilizing travel assistance could cut deportation costs by roughly 70%, with the average expense for arresting and removing illegal immigrants being about $17,121.
The initial phase of travel assistance has seen success, with some illegal immigrants recently using the program for flights from Chicago to Honduras. Additional tickets have already been booked for the upcoming weeks.
Those opting to leave through the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program can expect a safe departure, potentially allowing for legal re-entry in the future.

The timing of the survey correlates with findings from an April poll by CNN and CBS News, both suggesting a majority support deportation.
