Mother’s Tragic Accident Leads to Amputation

An 81-year-old woman in California had both of her legs amputated after an impaired driver crashed into the outdoor dining area of a restaurant where she was having lunch.

Cristina Vargas was sitting at a sidewalk table outside Los Cinco Puntos in Boyle Heights with her daughter, Gabriela, and a male friend when an SUV collided with them around 3:30 p.m. on July 7.

Surveillance video shows the SUV veering off the road and into the outdoor space, where the sound of screeching tires could be heard just before the impact, which sent diners and their belongings flying.

“I just remember hearing screeching, and when I lifted my head, I saw headlights and a bumper, followed by a big boom,” Gabriela recounted. “The next thing I knew, I was airborne.”

In the accident, Cristina became pinned under the vehicle, while Gabriela sustained a head injury and a severe knee laceration. They were both rushed to a hospital, along with their friend.

While Gabriela and their male friend have since recovered, Cristina’s situation was much more severe, forcing her to face a difficult path to recovery. She underwent three surgeries before ultimately losing both legs but expressed gratitude for being alive and has remained positive throughout her ordeal.

Currently in physical therapy, Cristina will soon be returning home, looking forward to being with her family and friends again.

Gabriela expressed her commitment to providing the best care for her mother moving forward. “My goal is to give her the best quality of care from here on out,” she said.

The police report indicated that the driver was impaired at the time of the incident. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been arrested and faces multiple felony charges.

A GoFundMe campaign organized by a friend for the Vargas family has raised over $30,000. It highlights the financial strain they’re facing with mounting medical bills and ongoing rehabilitation needs.

“Cristina will need substantial support to adjust to her new disability, including making their home accessible and covering specialized care expenses,” the fundraiser stated. “The journey ahead is long and challenging, but with your help, they can focus on healing rather than financial stress.”

The campaign characterized Cristina as a lively individual with a deep passion for life, known for her love of dance and active involvement in community activities. Her sudden medical crisis is especially poignant given her vibrant lifestyle.

In an update on August 17, Gabriela expressed gratitude for the support received and mentioned that their recovery is gradual. “Thank you everyone for your love and support. It’s a slow recovery, but day by day, we’re getting through it. My mom’s spirits remain hopeful, as do mine. Recovery is very painful, but she’s giving it her all,” she said.
