Brooklyn Mother Seeks Safety After Son’s Shooting
A heartbroken mother is reaching out for assistance after her 9-year-old son became a victim in what appears to be a gang-related shooting in Brooklyn. She feels desperate to move her family to a safer environment.
“Honestly, I really hate asking for help,” Chanice Richardson shared on Facebook. Along with her message, she posted a picture of her injured son in a hospital bed.
“I’ve dealt with violence for 21 years,” she wrote in her post on Friday. “It’s evident that I need to set aside my pride and do whatever it takes for my child! I’m asking for help to give my baby a fair shot at life.”
Her son, known as Sebastian to neighbors, was shot in the foot right outside their home on Bristol Street in Brownsville just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, officials confirmed.
A local resident, who’s lived in the area since the 1990s, recounted, “I heard gunshots, pow, pow, pow.”
“When I heard someone screaming, it sounded like my grandson,” she said, choosing to remain anonymous. “I rushed outside and found him right there, crying and screaming, ‘Auntie, I’ve been shot. I’ve been shot in the leg. Somebody help me!'”
He was holding onto a railing near the entrance, trying to stay standing.
“He was bleeding and refused to let anyone touch him,” she recalled. “He mentioned seeing a man who then ran into the building.”
This woman’s mother accompanied her to the hospital where they reported the incident to the police.
“It’s awful,” she expressed, “It’s tragic. It could have been one of my own grandchildren.”
Authorities stated that the boy was urgently taken to Maimonides Medical Center.
In another stirring post, the mother lamented:
“I wish these kids could just stay inside and be safe. They deserve to enjoy their childhood… I was planning to leave this place within two years.” In a follow-up post, she wrote, “Getting out of here is crucial. I’ve been a mom for 21 years, and this is the toughest situation I’ve faced. It just hurts to see my baby going through this.”
Police are currently offering a $3,500 reward for information leading to the shooter’s capture, noting that three individuals fled from the scene.
A local woman, who calls herself Kay Kay, suggested the mother consider relocating for her son’s well-being. “He shouldn’t have to grow up in fear,” remarked the 51-year-old daycare owner. “Being in an environment like this is going to harm him mentally. He’ll constantly relive this moment.”
She expressed her hope that the perpetrators would be caught. “They should be locked up. Thank goodness it was only a leg injury. What if it was something worse?”
This incident occurred just six blocks away from the 73rd Precinct, where NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch had held a press conference earlier in the day, announcing the seizure of 1,000 firearms since the year began.
As of March 22, there had already been 142 mass shootings reported across the city, matching the numbers from the previous year. However, recent data indicates that there were 54 mass shootings in the past 28 days, marking a 32% increase compared to the same period last year.
