Tamara Tarpinian-Yachim, whose son, Eric, a Congressional intern, was tragically shot in Washington, D.C. in late June, recently shared her appreciation for a letter she received from President Donald Trump. She expressed how it brought her comfort during this difficult time.
Tamarata mentioned to reporters that the letter, which was sent by Trump, really touched her, emphasizing how “kind” he is to children. She reflected, perhaps a little surprised, on the kindness she felt from him, stating that he’s not the “monster” some portray him to be.
“I felt better,” Tamara said regarding the note she received. “People call [Trump] a monster, but he’s not. He is really a good person—kind to the kids.”
“I couldn’t believe he did this,” she added.
The Metropolitan Police had reported that Eric was killed on June 30, along with two other individuals, when multiple suspects opened fire about a mile from the White House. It was noted that he wasn’t the target of the shooting, unfortunately succumbing to his injuries the next day in the hospital. At the time, he was interning with Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kan).
“He loved his job and everyone there,” Tamara recalled during an interview. “He liked working with people on both sides of the aisle and had connections with kids from both parties,” she told The Howie Carr Show.
On July 17, Trump and First Lady Melania sent their condolences to the Jachim family, expressing their devastation over the “meaningless acts of violence” that took Eric’s life.
In his letter, Trump wrote, “While you may never fully understand the impact Eric has had in his meaningful life, he will be remembered for his kindness and dedication to your family and friends.” He also assured them he would not forget the tragic violence that robbed them of their son, reiterating his commitment to tackle crime and restore peace.
“May God embrace Eric in eternal love and care,” he concluded, extending his thoughts towards Tamara and her other children, Angela and Jeremy.
The letter, which was read aloud during Eric’s funeral by Massachusetts Republican Chairman Amy Carnevale, resonated strongly with those in attendance.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Eric’s murder.
