Mountain Lion Kills California Man in First Fatal Attack Since 2004

A mountain lion killed a 21-year-old man and attacked his 18-year-old brother in El Dorado County, east of Sacramento, California, in the state’s first fatality since 2004.

Mountain lions usually avoid humans. One appeared outside my home in Los Angeles in October 2022 and retreated without incident.

The brothers were out searching for a stray antler in a secluded area of ​​Darling Ridge Road and Skid Road when the attack occurred. An 18-year-old boy called 911 at 1:13 p.m. to say he and his younger brother had been attacked and suffered facial injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. He said he became separated from his brother during the attack, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities and emergency personnel arrived at the scene about 20 minutes later. They began treating an 18-year-old boy and searching for a 21-year-old boy.

About 10 minutes later, sheriff’s office personnel found the brother on the ground with a mountain lion crouched next to him. Deputies fired their weapons to try to scare the mountain lion away, but by the time they reached the man, he was dead, the sheriff’s office said.

The mountain lion was then killed.

Mountain lions are much more likely to be killed by humans than vice versa. In 2022, a famous mountain lion known as P-22 that lived in the hills above Hollywood was euthanized by authorities after being hit by a car and sustaining injuries.
