Cruise companies have a history of competing over larger ships and more extravagant features, but one line is really taking things up a notch—literally.
MSC Cruises has revealed plans for a massive outdoor “theme park” aboard its upcoming flagship, MSC World Asia. This will include a water swing that operates above the water.
Named ‘Cliffhanger’, this attraction is promoted as Europe’s first water trapeze, dangling above the ship’s deck and providing clear views of the ocean.
The company envisions this as part of a larger outdoor area called ‘The Harbor’, which aims to be a central spot for family activities and outdoor enjoyment.
This zone will also have a ropes course, a waterslide, and supposedly the longest dry slide at sea, along with playgrounds and places for gathering, as noted in their announcement.
In the evenings, this space is set to become a vibrant entertainment hub with a full schedule of activities.
“As a family-owned company, MSC Cruises understands what it takes to keep everyone satisfied during a vacation,” stated Steve Leatham, the company’s vice president of entertainment.
Headquartered in Geneva, MSC is now the third largest cruise company globally, boasting a fleet of 23 ships and routes to over 300 destinations across five continents.
The outdoor park indicates an ongoing trend toward immersive experiences for all ages, a movement that’s growing in the cruise industry as ships evolve into floating resorts.
At the core of the ship will be the Family Aventura District, designed to merge outdoor adventures with indoor entertainment, featuring a 10,000-square-foot kids’ club and an interactive arena where the floor itself becomes part of a digital game.
The ship is also set to include tech-driven experiences for older kids and teens—think events and competitions hosted by AI avatars, as mentioned by the company.
MSC World Asia is expected to launch in December 2026, offering seven-night Mediterranean cruises that stop at places like Barcelona, Naples, and Rome.
However, there seems to be a split among cruise enthusiasts regarding how this new ship weighs value against experience.
On forums, some travelers mention that MSC’s pricing is competitive, with similarly good amenities, whereas others believe rival lines still excel, especially in dining and family programming.
As it stands, amusement-style attractions have gradually made their way onto ships, from zip lines to surf simulators, and the emergence of outdoor theme parks seems to underscore the industry’s focus on enhancing onboard experiences.
