Marjorie Taylor Greene Challenges Trump Again Over Cryptocurrency Bill

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has diverged from President Donald Trump for the third time this week.

On Thursday, lawmakers in Georgia voted against a significant cryptocurrency bill, despite Trump’s urging to support it. This bill is dubbed the “Genius Law,” and Greene expresses strong disapproval, stating it “ends freedom forever.”

In a tweet, she warns about the implications of a cashless society, noting that the foundations of such a society, managed by digital currency, are currently being laid out. She emphasizes a lack of control over personal finances, stressing that government would take charge instead, which she believes could completely strip away freedoms.

This tension between Trump and Greene reflects a broader rift, especially considering Greene has traditionally supported Trump on Capitol Hill. Recently, she shared her thoughts on how the Trump administration managed the controversy surrounding Jeffrey Epstein’s files, claiming that discrepancies regarding the FBI’s client list have crossed a “red line.” On the same day, she voiced her willingness to send arms to Ukraine, while also criticizing Trump for moving away from his America-first stance that he campaigned on.

Greene expressed her concerns not only about Ukraine but about U.S. foreign wars more broadly, asserting that this is what voters expected from her office. Meanwhile, she had been outspoken against Trump’s foreign policy in June, particularly regarding an airstrike against an Iranian nuclear site. Yet, she maintains a convoluted stance, posting a message of support for Trump while acknowledging their policy disagreements.

Despite Trump’s support for cryptocurrency ventures, Greene is notably against the Genius Bill, advocating for a straightforward ban on central bank digital currency (CBDC). She fears that integrating cryptocurrencies more deeply into the U.S. financial system could enable the Federal Reserve to launch its own central digital currency.

While Republican leaders have suggested adding anti-CBDC measures to the defense budget, Greene remains skeptical about their effectiveness, implying they could be eliminated in the Senate. During an interview, she emphasized her Christian beliefs, referencing a biblical passage that makes her uneasy about voting for such systems.

Interestingly, the bill prohibits Congress members and their families from profiting off stubcoins, although this restriction doesn’t cover the president or his family. Notably, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have been involved in launching their own stubcoin through a cryptocurrency firm.
