Mullin Claims DHS Has Provided DOJ a Significant Case Against Ilhan Omar

Homeland Security Department’s Investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin indicated that his department has provided a substantial case to the Justice Department regarding the federal investigation of Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN). Interestingly, as of now, no charges have been filed against her.

Mullin mentioned that Homeland Security Investigations dedicated significant effort to this case before passing it on to federal prosecutors. He described it as “a large case” handed over to the DOJ, which is currently overseeing the investigation.

In a recent court filing, prosecutors noted that the inquiry might extend beyond just the congresswoman, stating, “The investigation of [the Subject and] other individuals continues.” However, they did not elaborate on who else might be involved or how they could be connected.

On the same day that agents searched Omar’s Washington residence, they also executed a second warrant at her sister’s home, Sahra Noor, confiscating several boxes of documents.

In addition, grand jury subpoenas have been issued to over a dozen individuals, including family members. This grand jury, interestingly enough, is based in Minnesota rather than Washington.

This month, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro mentioned that there are multiple investigations underway concerning Omar, including a separate probe into her financial disclosures.

Mullin dismissed suggestions that the investigation is politically motivated, stating, “We’re not weaponizing, we’re not using political theater on this.” He emphasized that enforcement actions do not depend on a person’s political position or party affiliation and that anyone found violating the law would face the same consequences.

On October 18, former President Barack Obama expressed his view on social media, stating that “The government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs.”

A group of more than 170 House Democrats has called on the Justice Department to discontinue the inquiry, referencing a 2019 assessment from the initial Trump administration which concluded there was insufficient evidence of any wrongdoing.

Earlier this month, Mullin asserted that investigators were preparing to present the matter to a grand jury, mentioning, “We had a judge sign it.”

Omar has consistently denied any misconduct and characterized the investigation as politically driven. She has also refuted ongoing allegations concerning her personal life, particularly regarding claims of marrying her brother—accusations that have yet to be substantiated.

According to the filing, Attorney General Todd Blanche authorized the warrant, confirming that its timing was not intended to affect any elections, particularly with Omar’s name appearing on the ballot this Tuesday.
