Controversial Mural in France Sparks Debate
A new mural dubbed the “Silent Protest of the Statue of Liberty” has stirred quite a bit of controversy. Created by Dutch artist Judith de Leeuw, it’s located on a brick wall of the Lueu de Kemin de Fah’s building in Roubaix, France. The unveiling on July 3rd, just a day before American Independence Day, has caught the attention of many.
De Leeuw commented that the mural represents a loss of values traditionally associated with the image of freedom and hope. “The ideals of being oneself have been lost for many,” she stated to EuroNews, referring to the struggles faced by the city’s large immigrant population, many of whom live in harsh conditions.
This mural features the Statue of Liberty, notable for its crown that includes nine spikes instead of the seven found on the original statue. It’s also strategically placed in a city known for high immigration rates, with statistics indicating that about 22.3% of Roubaix’s population were immigrants in 2021.
De Leeuw admitted to being anxious about the mural’s reception but found that locals resonated with its message, particularly given the challenging realities surrounding immigration in France. For context, reports reveal that in 2022, a significant percentage of violent crimes in the Paris region were attributed to foreigners.
French President Emmanuel Macron weighed in previously by highlighting that many crimes are committed by undocumented immigrants and that they often navigate through difficult circumstances. His remarks come amid intensified enforcement of immigration laws and deportations in the U.S. by agencies like ICE.
