Elon Musk Critiques Trump’s Spending Bill

In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk, who has distanced himself from his previous role as a special advisor to the Trump administration, publicly urged Congress to reject President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.”

Musk’s argument centers on the concern that this bill, which he claims is set to increase federal debt by over $36 trillion in the next decade, could add an additional $2.5 to $5 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t take it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-laden bill is a disgrace. I feel embarrassed for those who supported it. You know it was the wrong choice,” he stated.

The tension between Musk and Trump escalated after the House passed the spending bill last month, which is now under Senate scrutiny.

Musk has been vocal on social media, criticizing Congress and calling for a completely new spending proposal that wouldn’t raise the debt ceiling by $5 trillion. He further pointed out that the federal government is already burdened with over $1 trillion per year in interest payments on its debt.

“Interest payments already absorb 25% of all government revenue. If the deficit spending persists, we might just be able to pay interest. This is what I call debt slavery for Americans,” he added.

On Wednesday, Musk continued to advocate for Americans to reach out to their Senators and House representatives to put an end to the bill.

In response to Musk’s statements, House GOP Fiscal Hawk Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) voiced his support, despite previously facing backlash from Trump for not supporting similar spending initiatives.

“This bill has a debt bomb attached to it. It represents a significant chance for conservatives to help realign our country’s fiscal direction. Killing this bill could open doors for more sustainable solutions instead of leading us towards bankruptcy,” Massie remarked.

Similarly, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) criticized Trump’s bill, which prompted a noteworthy response from the President.

“If it only makes the 2017 tax cuts permanent, then I’m not on board. That’s just not the reality—this bill represents the largest debt cap increase yet, with the U.S. borrowing an additional $5 trillion over the next two years,” Paul commented.

Trump later responded, asserting that “Rand Paul doesn’t fully grasp the benefits of the bill. He consistently votes ‘no’ on everything.”

Amid this ongoing debate, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) defended the bill, contending that Musk’s understanding is flawed.

“With all due respect, Elon is mistaken about this legislation. Our law fulfills major campaign commitments, ensuring savings of over $1.6 trillion. It maintains border security, offers significant tax relief for hardworking Americans, and promotes national strength,” Johnson stated.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt also addressed Musk’s objections, asserting, “The president is firmly committed to this bill. It’s a big, beautiful bill, and he stands by it.”

Overall, Trump’s bill aims to prolong the 2017 tax cuts while significantly increasing defense spending, but it faces growing scrutiny and dissent from various quarters.
