On Monday, officials confirmed that members of the Islamic organization Why Islam were distributing religious materials at a public high school in Wylie, Texas.

A widely shared video shows the group handing out a pamphlet titled “Understanding Sharia,” alongside a Quran and a hijab. The video featured the president of the school’s High School Republicans and noted that candy was also given out.

The district provided a statement to families at Wiley East High School, mentioning that an “outside organization” was involved in distributing these materials on campus.

Reportedly, four women from Why Islam were present at the school during this event.

“We reviewed surveillance footage and found that fewer than 50 students visited the table,” officials noted. “Most students grabbed a piece of candy, a few received henna designs, and about a dozen tried on a scarf or hijab.”

Officials stated that the group did not have authorization to distribute materials on campus. “Outside parties are not allowed to hand out materials to students without prior approval from campus and district administration,” they clarified. “In this case, the organization lacked permission for both distribution and speaking to students outside official clubs.”

The official added, “These protocols are in place to protect the learning environment and to ensure parents feel secure about what their children are encountering during school.” The statement pointed out that the situation was not a matter of religion or ideology, but rather a procedural error. “Had the proper steps been followed, this wouldn’t have happened. We take this issue very seriously.”

They acknowledged that “a mistake was made” and accepted full responsibility. “We are actively addressing this issue and reviewing our internal processes as well as oversight related to student clubs and guest approvals to prevent future occurrences.”

According to its website, Why Islam aims to “provide accurate information about Islam, the world’s fastest-growing religion,” practiced by over 1.6 billion individuals globally. Their goal is to challenge widespread stereotypes and misconceptions about Islam and Muslims.

It remains unclear why Why Islam did not respond to requests for comments regarding the incident.
