Former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi suffered a fall while attending an event in Luxembourg with other members of Congress on Saturday and underwent hip replacement surgery at a US military hospital in Germany.
California Democratic Party spokesman Ian Crager said Pelosi, 84, is “recovering well.”
Pelosi thanked the staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the Luxembourg hospital where she was also treated for their “excellent care and kindness.”
Pelosi was traveling to Europe with a bipartisan congressional delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
Pelosi tripped and fell during the event, breaking her hip, according to people familiar with her injury. He was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Among the visitors was Texas Republican Michael McCaul, who posted on social media to wish Pelosi “a speedy recovery.”
The San Francisco congressman has stepped down as speaker, the most powerful position after the vice president and the president, but remains a member of the House and maintains influence within the party.
Pelosi was first elected in 1987. She served as speaker twice and resigned from the leadership post two years ago, but remained in Congress and was re-elected to represent the San Francisco district in November.
