Former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised California's new bill, AB 1840, which allows illegal immigrants to get loans for first-time homebuyers.

The bill would require the California Housing Finance Agency's homebuying assistance program, known as the “California Dream for All” program, to provide taxpayer-funded loans for “homeownership” to undocumented immigrants.

In addition to mortgages for illegal immigrants, Pelosi said,[moving] He warned that “it should be documented,” but many questioned whether this was the plan from the beginning.

Pelosi appeared on the popular late-night show “Bill Maher in Real Time.”

“The California legislature passed a law that Governor Newsom hasn't signed yet that would give illegal immigrants federal assistance to buy homes,” Maher told Pelosi. “I don't think that's a position that Democrats have taken in the past on immigration. I'm not saying that the country is going to be like that, but California is certainly like that.”

“Well, I will say, immigration has always been a bipartisan issue, I will say that,” Pelosi said.

“But there are no free houses,” Maher interjected.

“Well, it's not about free housing. It's about making the American Dream available to more people,” Pelosi responded. “But understand this about immigration. The greatest speech on immigration was by President Ronald Reagan. He said, 'This is the last speech I will give as President of the United States. I want to give a message to my beloved country.' And he talked about the Statue of Liberty and how it's a beacon of hope to the world, and how America has been preeminent to the world because our doors have always been open. And when you close your doors, that preeminence is gone.”

Pelosi continued, “I'm not taking credit for a great communicator. Google it. It's a great speech. George Herbert Walker Bush also kept talking about the diversity of America and the rest of the world. California has always been at the forefront. Other states may follow, but that's up to each state. But we're a place that's blessed with great diversity here.”

“So will you vote for this legislation?” Maher asked.

“Well, I don't know exactly what that means, but making the American dream of homeownership accessible to all is something we have to do for the people here right now,” Pelosi added.

“This is for pre-citizens. This is for illegal immigrants,” Maher responded.

“Well, what I would do is document immigration,” Pelosi said. “One of the best things we can do for our economy is to pass comprehensive immigration reform.”

California has one of the toughest housing situations in the state, with a shortage of affordable housing that is already affecting local residents, with the US facing a housing shortage of more than 4.5 million units by 2022. JiroThe housing shortage is most acute in California's top 50 major cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Riverside, San Diego, Sacramento and San Jose.
