NASA and NFL Team Up for Unique Collaboration
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Football League (NFL) have revealed an exciting partnership that includes aircraft flyovers and astronaut appearances at select football games.
“The agency will soon bring America’s strengths in space exploration and aeronautics innovation to the football field,” NASA mentioned in a press release announcing its new Inspiration Tour.
As of now, NASA’s involvement is confirmed for several upcoming games:
- Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Atlanta Falcons in Pittsburgh on September 13th
- Baltimore Ravens vs. New Orleans Saints in Baltimore on September 20th
- Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Rams in Philadelphia on October 4th
- New York Jets vs. Cleveland Browns in East Rutherford, New Jersey on October 11th
There may be additional games announced later, according to NASA officials.
Some of these games will feature flyovers that showcase NASA’s aircraft fleet, which is utilized for high-speed testing, high-altitude research, astronaut training, among other purposes.
“Regularly flying the aircraft maintains the health of the fleet and publicly demonstrates new technologies that may be applied to future commercial air travel,” the agency stated.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will spearhead the tour across the country, aiming to “connect the agency with the people, technologies, and organizations that drive American leadership in space.”
“This is the first season NASA is taking part in flyovers at NFL games, bringing the excitement of America’s space program directly to fans across the country,” Isaacman noted. “We’re returning to the Moon, building a Moon Base, advancing fission-powered spacecraft, and pushing the boundaries in aeronautics, science, and discovery. Achieving those ambitions will take the very best of America, and partnering with the NFL gives us an incredible platform to inspire the next generation to look up and imagine the possibilities.”
The tour will culminate in a grand finale known as MAX POWER, an aerospace and technology expo and air show, scheduled for November 7th and 8th at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
In line with the fan engagement activities set for the NFL games, the MAX POWER event is expected to feature “NASA air shows, technology demonstrations, spaceflight hardware, military aircraft, and behind-the-scenes access to America’s spaceport.” Attendees will also have the chance to meet astronauts from some of NASA’s most significant missions. This tour and expo will coincide with America’s Semiquincentennial.
