Hendrick Motorsports Technical Solutions Faces Criticism
Hendrick Motorsports Technical Solutions has been criticized for its strong push to engage with federal government contracts.
This company, established by ex-NASCAR driver Rick Hendrick, connects with Hendrick Motorsports, a leading team in NASCAR. The team boasts the highest number of wins in the Cup Series and holds a remarkable 14 championships, making it one of the most valuable teams in the sport. In 2020, its estimated value reached $315 million.
Recently, Hendrick supplied over 20 vehicles to the Trump administration, specifically for use by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as first reported by the Washington Post.
A spokesperson for Hendrick Companies mentioned, “Earlier this year, we sold 25 standard Chevrolet Tahoes to the federal government. The vehicles remain unmodified, and we have completed the transaction. We have no influence on how they are branded or utilized by our distributors after purchase.”
The purchase price for these Tahoes was $2.25 million, with an additional $174,000 spent on custom wrapping by another firm, according to the Post.
Interestingly, the contract didn’t follow a competitive bidding process, which meant ICE needed to justify skipping negotiations. They claimed the urgency of their needs was critical for visible law enforcement presence and public safety operations.
While some activists focused on the lack of bids, others were more concerned about Hendrick’s relationship with federal agencies.
A Georgian individual expressed sentiment online, stating that Hendrick “deserves to be harassed” and described him in rather unflattering terms. Another user called him “Evil” for providing vehicles to ICE.
In a different online video, a woman in Charlotte pointed out that the new SUVs for ICE were sourced from Rick Hendrick Auto, urging viewers to remember this when shopping for cars.
Another individual remarked, “We’re not going to support them,” referring to Hendrick Motorsports, while endorsing a rival Ford dealership instead.
In another perspective, one left-leaning NASCAR fan criticized the low expectations placed on NASCAR figures, especially those involved with selling vehicles to ICE.
A senior official from the Department of Homeland Security clarified to the Post that every law enforcement agency, including ICE, needs a range of vehicles to fulfill its mission and that the recent funding allows them to bolster their fleet.
